Top 3 Pizzas in Shanghai

As a part Shanghainese, I am proud to say that we have one of the best-tasting pizzas in the entire country. Shanghai, a vibrant crossroads of Eastern and Western cultures, offers a rich array of delicious Western cuisines scattered throughout its bustling streets. In this blog, I’m excited to share my top three favorite pizza places in Shanghai—all Italian, of course! If you’re a pizza lover like me, keep reading!

Mammamia

Mammamia has two locations in Shanghai: one in the city center and another a bit further out. Both are situated in a lively space that features a variety of food options, allowing you to order from other restaurants if you wish.

The ambiance at Mammamia feels like stepping into a family-owned restaurant in Italy. My benchmark for a great pizza spot is their margherita, and Mammamia truly delivers. The crust is thin yet puffy, and the tomato sauce is the richest I’ve ever tasted. I also can’t get enough of their tuna salad, which features a delightful black vinegar and olive oil dressing—so good that I want to steal the recipe! The addition of pumpkin seeds and dried cranberries gives it a satisfying crunch.

Alimentari

Alimentari has numerous locations throughout Shanghai, including a few in other provinces. My favorite is “Alimentari Grande,” the original and oldest of the bunch. The atmosphere is relaxed, infused with Southern European vibes and music, making it a popular spot for post-work gatherings. Be prepared for a wait if you visit on the weekends!

Their special pizza is exceptional, with ham that strikes the perfect balance of saltiness and flavor. Plus, their brunch options make it a beloved hangout for locals. You’ll find the oven conveniently located near the stairs. The name “Alimentari” translates to “butcher” in Italian, and they’re well-known for their impressive cheese, ham and olives counter, where you can select your favorites to create your own plate.

Bella Vita

Bella Vita is owned by an Italian proprietor and features a staff of friendly foreign servers. The starter focaccia bread is incredibly fluffy and toasted, served with a delicious vinegar and olive oil dip. Their Bella Vita pizza is not only amazing but also affordable. The thinly sliced ham complements the arugula and olive oil perfectly, all atop a crispy crust. Whether you’re looking for a cozy spot to work on a Friday afternoon or a lively place for a girls’ night out, Bella Vita is the ideal choice.

Conclusion

Shanghai’s pizza scene is a testament to the city’s unique blend of cultures. Whether you’re indulging in the rich tomato sauce at Mammamia, savoring the artisanal touches at Alimentari, or enjoying the inviting atmosphere of Bella Vita, each restaurant provides a memorable dining experience. So, gather your fellow pizza lovers and explore these top spots for a slice of happiness in Shanghai!
