Tucked away in the Jing’an Temple area, Yaya’s is a hidden gem that has become a favorite among local white-collar workers looking for a quick yet satisfying meal. The ambiance here is incredibly inviting, with a chill vibe enhanced by punk-style decorations and the soothing sounds of jazz music. One of my favorite things to do is sit by the open kitchen and watch the chefs at work, turning fresh ingredients into delicious dishes.

Yaya’s menu boasts a mix of starters, pastas, and desserts that blend Chinese and Western flavors. Their “Dan’s Pappardelle Lamb Ragu” is a must-try, featuring a slow-cooked lamb ragu infused with Chinese spices like Sichuan pepper and topped with a dollop of sour cream. The pappardelle is perfectly cooked, offering a chewiness that complements the rich sauce. Another standout dish is the “Mapo Lasagna with Pork Ragu,” a creative twist on the classic Mapo tofu. This dish is spicy and savory, with layers of pasta interspersed with a flavorful pork ragu. Keep in mind that the “Mapo Lasagna” is made in limited quantities, so arriving early is key if you want to try it out!

Solo

For those looking for a fine dining experience, Solo is a black pearl-awarded restaurant nestled in the sycamore region of Hengshan Road. The interior strikes a perfect balance between elegance and relaxation, making it an ideal spot for dates or gatherings with friends. However, be sure to make a reservation two weeks in advance, as this popular restaurant tends to fill up quickly, especially on weekends.

One of the restaurant’s hidden treasures is their scallion oil noodles, a dish not listed on the menu but highly recommended on various ratings apps. If you ask your server after your meal, they might surprise you with this delightful dish at no extra charge! Inspired by the traditional Shanghainese scallion oil noodles, this version uses pasta, which is infused with fragrant scallion oil. The noodles have just the right amount of chew, creating a successful fusion of Eastern and Western cuisines that you won’t want to miss.

Alimentari Grande

Last but certainly not least, Alimentari Grande is my go-to Italian restaurant in Shanghai (If you haven’t checked out my “Top 3 Pizza” list, I highly recommend it). This cozy family-run establishment consistently surprises me with its innovative dishes and creative flavors.

Alimentari offers a fantastic selection of homemade pastas, and I can’t recommend their “XXL Truffle Pacheri ‘to share’” enough, especially if you’re dining with a group. This dish is topped with generous shavings of black truffle, served over short pasta in a creamy mushroom sauce. The addition of walnuts and bacon brings a smoky flavor and a crunch to each bite.

For a lighter option, try the “Gnocchi Spinach,” one of their bestsellers. These handmade potato gnocchis are wonderfully chewy and are paired with a pesto sauce made from fresh spinach. Complemented by sides of asparagus, pine nuts, and parmesan cheese, this dish offers a rich experience that showcases the best of Italian cuisine.

Fenoli

Located on the B1 floor of a mall, Fenoli is a cozy pasta place that may be small in size but certainly delivers big on flavor. Their lunch set allows you to select one entrée and one pasta, making it a great option for a midday meal. The entrées are delectable, featuring options like prawn tartare, kingfish carpaccio, and beef carpaccio, each prepared with care and fresh ingredients.

For pasta, you can’t go wrong with their slow-cooked beef ragu, which is surprisingly tender and packed with meaty goodness. You have the option to choose from beef brisket, beef shank, or ox tongue for the sauce, each providing a unique and rich flavor profile that elevates the dish.
